Born in 1989 and raised in rural Suffolk, I grew up juggling two of my first loves: music and art. At 19, I moved to Leeds, West Yorkshire to complete a music degree at Leeds College of Music, specialising in singing and composition. I address both music and art with a similar ethos: charisma, drama, experimentation and, above all, enjoyment.
In terms of artistic style, I dabble in many different procedures, often combining several methods in one piece to concoct a rich playground of printing, marbling, collage and other alternative approaches. These processes creep into my landscapes and help bring out a consistency across my artwork - which can vary from squint-and-it's-fabulous kind of intricacy through to vast, pupil-dilating boldness. blarg.
I work quite impulsively, utilising whatever I find in the vicinity to construct an initial base of materials, whether it's hoover bags, old clothing, candles, sheep dung or bog roll; I like to give 'ugly' items a chance at glamour - a kind of charity, if you will. I then let the textured surface sing through the paint, which I apply using various techniques and implements to result in an incidental and organic sensuality. I am generous with colour and pattern, especially when interpreting the embellishments in landscapes: rows of crops, tractor trails, hedgerows, hay bales, sewage pipes, pylons, the A140 ; whatever catches my attention, really.
Be sure to keep up to date with my artistic pursuits by checking out the 'news' section for my latest announcements and upcoming/current exhibitions.
Thank you,
Alfie.
